Brilliantly and fairly written book gives the full picture
By Amazon Customer
I have been fascinated with Tony O'Reilly since his rugby days and while this is not the first book I have read about him it is by far the best. What impressed me was the author's considered approach. He was critical of several aspects of O'Reilly's actual business acumen especially as he grew older and his at times irresponsible "plunder profits borrow and buy" philosophy and the ridiculous seeking of a knighthood. But that is balanced with O'Reilly's personal qualities, his honesty and charm, genuine feeling for other people especially in his heyday and most of all his realism under fire. O'Reilly's business philosophy, as with many 1980's entrepreneurs, ultimately failed badly but somehow the man himself emerges as someone you know you would gain from meeting and even with the pain of failure-a terrible burden for investors such as he-his dignity and grace somehow intact.

Tony was the most outstanding ambassador Ireland ever produced and we owe a lot to him. However, like the slave in the back of the chariot whispering in the ear of the general during the victory parade - "Momento Mori" (remember that you are human). One of his friends needed to step up and be that whisperer.

Very readable biography of the rise and fall. Financial data was mixed and a bit lacking but overall well written.
