Her father has run off with a dental hygienist without a word, but Raymie is certain that if she wins the Little Miss Central Florida Tire competition, her father will see her picture in the newspaper and return. To this end, she begins baton-twirling classes with two other girls, Louisiana Elefante and Beverly Tapinski. Both girls have their own reasons for entering the competition: Louisiana needs the prize money, and Beverly wants to sabotage the event. While they never actually learn to twirl, the classes are nevertheless invaluable because of the unlikely friendship the girls form. All three have lost people close to them, and each girl deals with her loss in different ways. With each small adventure, whether it's finding a lost book or rescuing a beloved pet, their friendship grows into an undeniable bond. In short, precisely crafted chapters, DiCamillo once again demonstrates her ability to create unique characters that touch readers' hearts. Raymie, in particular, is observant, thoughtful, and sensitive as she struggles to make sense of the world around her. A 70s Kid

I really enjoyed this book. I was not too much older than these three girls in 1975. It took me on a memorable journey and caused me to reminiscence on my childhood. Growing up in the south and wanting to be a baton twirler. I loved the characters in this book so much - the positivity of Louisiana, the gruff exterior of Beverly although all she needed was a friend, and the little girl Raymie Nightingale who found that she can handle life going on and that she can be a big part of it. Totally loved this book! Another one by my all time favorite author.

The Rancheros will win your hearts!

You know when you've been waiting for a book so long, you worry if it can possibly meet your expectations. Well, this gem sure did! Kate DiCamillo has a way of breathing life into characters that makes you want to wrap your arms around them. In this story we meet 3 girls with complicated lives who find that together they can face their worst fears. As "the Rancheros" they help each other in their quests to win back what they've lost. You will want to read this book! And you will probably want to read it again!

Bad Character Development

I LOVED The Tales of Despereaux and Because of Winn Dixie, so I expected this book to be as captivating, and with the similar state of action.
Boy was I wrong.
I felt like this was the worst possible way to get me captivated, and Raymie, the main character had no distinct personality whatsoever. She didn't even have a personality at all, to be honest. It felt like Raymie was droning on through her life. There was no sense of despair throughout the book even though it revolved around getting her dad back from leaving her, but you couldn't even see the sadness through how dull the character development was. Maybe that was what DiCamillo intended; a character who droned on because she couldn't come to terms with what had happened to her parents.
But of course the two side characters were about as dull. They had their own personality, but it seemed to fall away with the boring plot and adventures which failed to get me even the least bit excited to read the rest. I don't personally like the book, although I know many others did, so maybe I missed the point.. All I know is that the characters, in my opinion, were terribly developed, and even with this too fast development which left gaping holes in the plot, the book was very slow. Maybe I am a bit biased since I don't typically read books which are in the third person point of view, but I have still read amazing books in the third person. I also feel that this book was lower than my reading level, so maybe if I were younger the book would be able to draw me in, but the simple sentencing just didn't do it for me. For all that were wondering I am in middle school, although I read YA/Adult novels, so this might have also changed my opinion.
