This book is the result of my teaching efforts during the last ten years at the Royal Institute of Technology. The purpose is to present the subject of polymer physics for undergraduate and graduate students, to focus the fundamental aspects of the subject and to show the link between experiments and theory. The intention is not to present a compilation of the currently available literature on the subject. Very few reference citations have thus been made. Each chapter has essentially the same structure: starling with an introduction, continuing with the actual subject, summarizing the chapter in 30D-500 words, and finally presenting problems and a list of relevant references for the reader. The solutions to the problems presented in Chapters 1-12 are given in Chapter 13. The theme of the book is essentially polymer science, with the exclusion of that part dealing directly with chemical reactions. The fundamentals in polymer science, including some basic polymer chemistry, are presented as an introduction in the first chapter. The next eight chapters deal with different phenomena (processes) and states of polymers. The last three chapters were written with the intention of making the reader think practically about polymer physics. How can a certain type of problem be solved? What kinds of experiment should be conducted? This book would never have been written without the help of my friend and adviser, Dr Anthony Bristow, who has spent many hours reading through the manuscript. criticizing the content.

Nietzsche- sometimes nutty, but always fascinating and provocative.

Never took a course which treated Nietzsche's work, but I read a little philosophy in desultory fashion. This short book is far more understandable than the usual, and the points of view are so iconoclastic and well-argued that I enjoy it thoroughly.
I was surprised to find the existential side of Nietzsche - previously I had thought his "God is dead" ideas were all just pessimism.

Good introduction

I'm no Nietzsche scholar, but I found this book to be remarkably helpful. I came to it looking for a concise introduction to Nietzsche and his work, and that's precisely what I got. Wicks' approach is roughly chronological, but this is not a biography. He takes the major themes of Nietzsche's thought and follows their development from the abandonment of God through to the embracing of "life" or "existence" (similar notions for Nietzsche, but as Wicks points out they are quite different things). Wicks is very good at exploring the influences on Nietzsche's thought, at situating it in nineteenth-century Europe, and at making fine conceptual distinctions. Refreshingly, he doesn't shy away from Nietzsche's many contradictions. Rather, he acknowledges them and then gives them a generous reading. This is helpful for students, as it allows them to see one possible conclusion but recognises that there may be others. All of Nietzsche's major concepts are explored - the will-to-power, slave morality, the ubermensch - but Wicks smoothly contextualises them so the reader comes to understand them as nuanced evolutions in Nietzsche's thought, and not just notions that can be transplanted into other traditions. Speaking of which, Wicks includes a very insightful chapter on the enduring influence of Nietzsche's work, especially its misunderstood connection with Nazism. As Wicks points out, Hitler clearly admired Nietzsche's idea of the "superman" and there is an unmistakably Nietzschean echo in Hitler's overblown rhetoric and "us vs. them" mentality. But these connections are superficial, and actually shared by many schools of social thought. Nietzsche was no Nazi. He was more often anti-German and anti-nationalist, and would probably have diagnosed Nazism as a violently defensive expression of weak and sickly society. The connection with Nazism is more the fault of Nietzsche's sister who ingratiated herself with European fascists in an attempt to extend the influence of her late brother's work. Wicks caps it all with a helpful glossary of key Nietzschean concepts and terms, detailed footnotes, a thorough index, and a categorized bibliography. The only things missing are a chronology/timeline of Nietzsche's life and publications, and a short statement on the major themes of each.

I'm just starting to read about nihilism and existential philosophy, but sometimes it can be daunting. Reading about Nietzsche and putting his life work into context made it easy for me to understand what he was talking about. I feel more confident to explore his works now that I've read this book.

In doing so, they joined a handful of white women in a rugged region that retained the frontier mentality of the gold rush some fifty years earlier. Hired to promote the federal government’s assimilation of American Indians, Arnold and Reed instead found themselves adapting to the world they entered, a complex and contentious territory of Anglo miners and Karuk families.

In the Land of the Grasshopper Song, Arnold and Reed’s account of their experiences, shows their irreverence towards Victorian ideals of womanhood, recounts their respect toward and friendship with Karuks, and offers a rare portrait of women’s western experiences in this era. Writing with self-deprecating humor, the women recall their misadventures as women “in a white man’s country” and as whites in Indian country. A story about crossing cultural divides, In the Land of the Grasshopper Song also documents Karuk resilience despite seemingly insurmountable odds.

About the Author
Mary Ellicott Arnold (1876–1968) and Mabel Reed (1876–1962), partners in life and work, were activists known for their foundational work for the cooperative movement, most notably their leadership of the Consumers Cooperative Services. Susan Bernardin is an associate professor of English at SUNY College at Oneonta and a coauthor of Trading Gazes: Euro-American Women Photographers and Native North Americans, 1880–1940. Andr� Cramblit is the operations director for the Northern California Indian Development Council. Terry Supahan is the president of Supahan Consulting Group, which provides guidance to tribes, rural governments, and community development organizations.

A great project-- albeit not long enough

This lively book describes one of the best projects the federal government ever undertook-- hiring two young women to go to "Indian Country"-- in this case the Klamath Mountain region of Northwest California-- to be NICE to the Indians. And that is what they authors did for two years, they made friends with the local people, gave them parties, Christmas presents, and Fourth of July celebrations, played a phonograph for them, rented houses from them, paid them to build houses for them, tried to intercede for them in land disputes and other conflicts, gave classes in the three Rs. According to the authors, the Indians reacted to all this with great enthusiasm, and that's not hard to believe given the treatment they'd been receiving since whites invaded the country in 1852. So it's a great story, although there are longeurs. The authors are very proud of their own accomplishments in learning to ride about the rugged country, and that is exciting at first but it becomes a bit less so since the adventures of crossing the rivers and negotiating the trails have a certain similarity. More information about the region's very diverse native cultures and ecosystems would have been welcome too. Natural history was a common enthusiasm in the early 1900s, and there's some stuff about that, but it's mostly sensationalism about "panthers" and rattlesnakes. Too bad the project didn't last longer.

This is a very special book about two women who, in the early 1900's, traveled to California from New Jersey and went on mule back and foot over the mountains in far northern CA to be Indian matrons with no idea about what a matron should do and lived with the Karuk and Yurok Indians in a warm and fascinating way. Their book is so very worth reading.

Speaks to the Human Condition

The play is so much better than the movie. One of the best, most insightful things that Harling does is to set the whole thing in Truvy's Beauty Shop--a strictly feminine space where women can say whatever they have to say. But in that honesty, they transcend any "chick flick" parochialism and speak deeply to the human condition. Women will connect to these characters in so many ways, but men also will relate to the "in the trenches" aspect of friends who support each other through everything.

Awesome story, awesome product

I bought this because I plan on directing the play later this year. It is a wonderful story about womanhood and will make you laugh and cry. I highly recommend this play, as it is by far one of my favorites. There is a movie version (equally amazing) so if you haven't seen it I recommend watching. (the quality of the book itself is also very nice.) mine arrived 2 days early :)
