Philip G. Roeder is Associate Professor of Political Science at University of California, San Diego. Donald Rothchild is Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Davis. He is the author of Managing Ethnic Conflict in Africa: Pressures and Incentives for Cooperation, coauthor of Sovereignty as Responsibility: Conflict Management in Africa, and coeditor of The International Spread of Ethnic Conflict: Fear, Diffusion, and Escalation.

power sharing not working?

The book starts off on a very topical and current note [circa 2006], by discussing the situation in Iraq, where a Shiite majority is trying to establish a majority rule in a newly [perhaps] democratic nation. Where here, perhaps refers to both the democratic and the nation. Certainly, the discussion on Iraq is meant to grab the reader's attention. Due to the still rapid unfolding of events in Iraq, you should be aware that the book tends to discuss other, more settled conflicts, like the Balkans.

The authors of the papers/chapters in this book argue that the traditional power sharing approach used in the aftermath of several civil conflicts offers little long term solace. At least in terms of building a lasting democracy. The conflicts analysed here often involved minority ethnic or regional groups that feared, perhaps rightly, a tyranny by the majority if a democracy was imposed or installed. A reflection of this is in the cynical phrase "one man, one vote, once", which was attributed to describe the newly independent African countries since the 1950s.

The book suggest that the power sharing might tend to freeze in the divisions already present in a country. Instead, alternative ways of divvying up the power are suggested, that might in the long run lead to a more sustainable and peaceful nation. Some readers might not necessarily agree with the conclusions presented, as being perhaps rather idealistic.

"Only the spirit of attack borne in a brave heart will bring success to any fighter aircraft, to matter how highly developed the aircraft may be." That quote from Adolf Galland, an Ace of the German Luftwaffe in WW II, was the motto of our 317th Fighter Interceptor Squadron in Alaska. The fighter pilot is a hunter, and his quarry is the most dangerous in the world - men who want to kill him! The best defense is a good offense - ATTACK! The US Air Force had a program called "Every Man a Tiger". A tiger does not kill impulsively or in anger, but plans his attack carefully and strikes with cool ferocity. We were tigers! Fighter pilots tell stories around the bar, but they seldom write them down. These stories were written by the fighter pilots themselves! Come with me and hear of the beauty of flight, the mortal danger of electrical power failure at night in a snowstorm, and the thrill of attack with 20mm cannons firing right under your feet!

What an intriguing and rare book!

The author shares short stories spanning his experience as a child living in Hawaii at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack through a full and distinguish career as a "combat" fighter pilot. It is rare for a fighter pilot to put stories down in the written word. Pilots seem to prefer verbal communications, using model aircraft mounted on the ends of wooden dowel rods demonstrating energy maneuverability warfare, counter-maneuvers, escape, and most importantly... Attack!

Gordon takes the reader on a personal and very real journey, seamlessly inviting the reader to experience the feelings and emotions of the actions in every story. From a mission over Korean waters nearly triggering World War III, and just now in part being declassified, to a unilateral "pay raise" he committed fellow pilots to for the barrack cleaning services of Vietnamese woman in their employ. You won't be able to put this book down.

There is no hubris like Tom Cruise in the Top Gun movie. This is the real deal, calm, professional, cool, collected and deadly. Perhaps at one time a level of hubris existed, but not in his book. Nor will you find yourself with the preverbal "The older I get, the better I was." taste in your mouth.

I suspect over time chronological age caught up with the author's age as defined by his real life, bleeding edge experiences. Anyone with a desire to learn what it was like to fly real combat missions, patrol at the top of the world in defense of this great nation, or appreciate the endless hours of training, sacrifice and commitment required to do this for 20 plus years will enjoy this book.

I have but two complaints, the first being the title. "The Spirit of Attack: Fighter Pilot Stories" may be accurate, but it is incomplete.

I would suggest for future printings; "The Spirit of Attack: Combat Fighter Pilot Stories".

Just one more word, but it's a big one. A Fighter Pilot is a human being; a Combat Fighter Pilot is a human "Doing". Gordon is a "doer" and has earned this distinction with more than 100 combat missions facing the pointy end of Soviet made Surface to Air Missiles (SAM).

In closing I felt I was left hanging. My disappointment rooted in having reached the end of the author's stories. I found myself hungry for more. I believe you will feel the same. I soothed my disappointment by reading this book a second time, a rare thing for me to do.

Well Done, Gordon I await a sequel.

A real story of flying!

If you want to know what it was like to be in a fighter squadron this book is one you need to read. I know because I was there when some of the incidents he describes happened. He was also kind enough to include some of my stories because they added to his. He tells it like it was! His flying career was a true adventure as was true for all of us.I'm sure if he could do it all over again he would as would I. A Real Gem!

Fantastic Book. I loved it.

I was an MA-1 Tech on the F106 at Selfridge from 1961 to 1964.
I was engrossed in Gordon's experience with the F106 and others. He makes the reader feel like he is flying with the author.
I rate the book 6 stars out of a possible 5.

Lots of info to digest and think through

I chose this book to review because this subject is very personal to me. Without going into too much detail, I have a family member that has an addiction. It has been a very trying time for me over the past year. I actually own the original book CODEPENDENT NO MORE but I haven't opened it yet. However, when this book was offered to me I realized that some good would come out of me reading it.

Going to a 12 step program such as Al-Anon, Nar-Anon or Codependents Anonymous is something the book highly recommends. The format of the book is shaped around the 12 steps of Codependents Anonymous with each chapter going into detail about a step or two. The steps are similar to those in other 12 step programs with slight adaptations to fit Codependents. Each chapter has exercises and activities to make sure the reader understands the steps discussed. Since it can take months or even years to move past certain steps, it can be a while before the book is finished. However taking as much time as it needs to come to this understanding is beneficial to find healing.

There are some places where I am in disagreement with the author. I'm not sure if this is because of my faith vs. the theory but several times I felt that I could not agree with Beattie. I completely understand the need that I need to focus on myself and reevaluate how I am acting and thinking. Maybe I just read it wrong or I'm not completely understanding but there were times when I felt that it seemed that the addict or whoever is causing you to be codependent was not at fault and you were. To worry or even think about them at all seemed to be wrong. It's said that you might even need to completely cut them out of your life in order to make yourself better. The thing with that is that even if you DO cut them out completely and never see or talk to them again, you'll still think about them. To completely have absolutely no feeling for them is impossible or at least it is for me. Still it's a good thing because it makes you think a lot and helps you to reevaluate how you have been living your life.

While I feel that the info in this book is very valuable and highly informative, as a workbook it fell flat for me. When I think of a workbook, I expect to be able to write IN the actual book. If an exercise called for jotting down thoughts or creating a list, I would expect to see actual space and lines in the book to write in. I also would have like a questionnaire or a survey to take to evaluate how you were before starting to read the book. Unfortunately this workbook contains none of that. Anytime there is an activity that calls for writing, the reader is expected to write in an external journal. I don't like that because that seems to defeat the entire purpose of a workbook. It means having to keep up with an extra item and seems pointless. I would want to keep everything together and in the future having to keep referring back and forth between two books would be confusing especially if you lose one. Therefore while the information is greatly useful, the actual setup of the workbook failed.

This is a book not to be rushed through. I read it pretty quickly to finish it in time for the tour but it's a book that I will be going back through again more slowly to make sure that everything sinks in. I found that I have been doing a lot of stuff already that the book mentioned prior to reading the book but there is still more that I need to learn and practice. Regardless of any criticism I've had in this review, please note that I'm not in denial about any codependency issues that I have. It is something that I have to work on in my life and pray that healing and hope will come my way.

Excellent BOOK!!! Extremely helpful to those who need it.

I purchased this as a companion to her book, "Codependent No More." It was definitely a book from GOD! It is helping me so much and I've had it less than a week.
Anyone with addicts in their family or close circle of friends owes it to themselves to read this and her other book as well.
It will answer questions you didn't realize you had.
VERY HELPFUL AND HEALING!!

Great Workbook for Codependency

After I fell apart after a relationship, I found out i was codependent. This book really helps to explain the whys of the illness. There was a lot there that really sounded like they were talking about me in my situation. Great stuff.

Vision: what is now known

In science mathematical modeling is considered the (often temporarily) final step in the explanatory process. Based on empirical data an explanatory hypothesis is developed and supported by a mathematical model of the process. If the model is found applicable under various conditions it is considered a valid (if perhaps not the only) explanation for a particular process in this world. Somewhat detailed mathematical models of vision and, in particular, color vision have been initiated in the second half of the 19th century. With the developments in neurobiology in the last 20 years much more has been learned about how stimuli entering the eye are processed in the brain. Much of this is related to the phenomenon called consciousness about which the millennia-old philosophical controversies continue unabated. In "Vision and Brain" Stone presents a useful, well-referenced state-of-of-the-art picture of the developments in the general field of vision, showing that human vision is a highly efficient guessing machine about what is in front of our face. That all the details of these processes have not yet been resolved is due mainly to the huge complexity of the processing in the brain. The book can be recommended as a mid-level introduction to these complexities and what is so far known about them in regard to vision. For this reader the only disappointment was that of the 224 pages of text in the book only 24 are devoted to color.

Richard Gargiulo and new co-author Emily Bouck encourage a deep awareness and understanding of the human side of special education. About the Author

Richard Gargiulo is a professor of special education in the School of Education at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. He received his Master′s degree and PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 1999, he was awarded the University′s President′s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has also served as a Fulbright Scholar to the Czech Republic and has authored numerous books on the subjects of special education, early childhood education, and child abuse and neglect. He has been president of the Council for Exceptional Children and president of the Division on Autism and Development Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children.

Emily Bouck is an Associate Professor of Special Education in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Special Education at Michigan State University. She received her doctorate in special education from Michigan State University. Dr. Bouck is the author of numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters relating to her two main areas of research: mathematics education for students with disabilities and functional life-skills education for students with disabilities with a central theme of assistive technology throughout both areas. Dr. Bouck is a Past President of the Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children and has also been active in the Technology and Media Division of the Council for Exceptional Children. Dr. Bouck taught courses on assistive technology; social, legal, and ethical issues in special education; special education methods; and doctoral seminars. She has experience working with a range of students with disabilities in school-settings from preschool through age 26.
