Deep Text, nice selection

This is the same book as "The Practice of Dzogchen" previously released in both paperback (no longer available) and hardback. There are lots of introductory Dzogchen books (as there are for Mahamudra, Kabbalah, etc.) and a number of mid-level ones too. This is NOT one of them. There are also pure scholarly works with a small, fervent readership. This isn't one of those either, though scholars may certainly find it very valuable. The commentator/translator excerpts from many of Longchenpa's (Longchen Rabjam's, 1308-63) various texts which are impossible to access in English otherwise. Longchenpa is one of, if not THE, greatest Dzogchen masters of all time. Nevertheless, this is not an easy text to read. Furthermore, it is inconsistent in depth & style (since it's really a set of excerpts). However, this is a definitive Dzogchen text--quite advanced, not for the beginner, challenging, & enlightening. It grows with you and re-reading texts in an unfamiliar area can increase understanding and familiarity (the way Jung studied Alchemy). This is a GREAT book, not to be underrated, but not every book is for every one. IMHO it would be better to read Longchenpa's "Kindly Bent to Ease Us" trilogy before attempting this one. It's a much easier read. Also, I'd recommend reading some Tulku Urgyen, Namkhai Norbu, & Drubwang Tsoknyi Rinpoche books before takling this one.

The most advanced Buddhist text available in English

I say this is one of the few books ever published that require more than an academic approach to understand. Read this book practice the contents with all your heart and you will receive benefit. I met someone who has a certificate of holiness conferred on her according to the Dharma rules who said this book was too advanced for her to even attempt reading. Before reading this, you could start with Buddhism That Every Buddhist Must Follow by Amang Nopu Pamu and H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III A Treasury of True Buddha-Dharma because to practice Buddhism, those books will also be necessary.

Lost Stars is the Star Wars Book We Should All Be Talking About

In a lot of ways, Lost Stars is perhaps the perfect Star Wars book. If nothing else it's easily my favorite book in the new Star Wars canon and perhaps my favorite Star Wars book in general. As someone who grew up on the old extended universe, that's saying a lot. But I mean every word of what I've said. Lost Stars is everything I ever wanted from a Star Wars book.

The author does a fantastic job of inventing her own story while fitting it seamlessly into the Star Wars narrative. She creates two interesting characters from a new, unique planet and culture. And then she takes us through their lives from the first time they meet at eight years old until the period shortly after Return of the Jedi when they are well into their twenties. They provide a refreshingly unique perspective on Star Wars, giving us insight on what it was like to be apart of the Empire when Alderaan was destroyed and how difficult it can be to balance duty with what is right. We meet new characters and old favorites in scenes that have real substance rather than coming off as merely fan service. We see the relationship between Thane Kyrell and Ciena Ree grow and evolve over years and insurmountable odds. It's Star Wars but it's more than that. It's a qhole new story that goes deeper than we have seen before on screen.

I really love this book. I know that there are people out there who hesitate to read it because it's been shoe-horned into the YA genre and because it's got a heavy emphasis on Thane and Ciena's relationship. But that really shouldn't stop people from picking this book and reading it. Everyone's talking about Aftermath by Chuck Wendig but, really, this is the book we should be talking about. This is the book that deserves credit for starting the post-ROTJ canon off strong.

This is the book I should've been looking forward to for the last few months!

Don't skip it just because it's in the young adult category, or because you were disappointed by Aftermath!

Even with focus on new "minor" characters, this feels like Star Wars, and it ties together important scenes, locations, and motivations. And it's fun!

My only "complaint" about this book is that it hasn't been marketed as strongly as Aftermath, probably because it's been relegated to the "Young Adult" category. But there's really nothing in it (and nothing that it's missing) that should keep any not-so-young adults from reading it. It's a solid, well-written story that takes the reader through the original trilogy from the point of view of new characters, and ends up at the very beginning of the "aftermath" that will eventually lead to The Force Awakens.

For a far broader audience than they're aiming for...

In short: this is the best Star Wars book I've read in ages. Marketed as YA (though the characters are adults for most of it), it should appeal to a far broader audience. It was more about what went on Jakku than the other books released on "Force Friday," as well.

Longer: When Star Wars was released in 1977, part of its appeal was that you knew who to cheer for and who to boo. After years of movies dominated by ambiguity and flawed heroes, this update of a silent melodrama seemed positively refreshing. But nothing's ever that black and white - there were (assuming for a moment that these characters were "real") human stories behind every TIE fighter that blew up. Not all of the billions of Imperials who didn't manage to jump ship and join the rebels were evil. Some were caught up in something that they misunderstood, that give them no choice, that lied to them.

LOST STARS begins with two characters drawn to the new Empire and all of its promises as children. The "Romeo and Juliet" comparisons people toss around are overstating things; their familiars aren't wild about their friendship, but it's a very minor issue in the overall book. As one quickly becomes cynical to the Empire and one tries to stay loyal, the two journey through the Star War trilogy (and a year or two beyond) on the fringes in sort of the same way that Forrest Gump journeyed through 20th century American history (or perhaps the way Phineas and Ferb journeyed through the periphery of " New Hope.)" But the references to stray lines and events in the original films never feel forced - the characters' stories are brilliantly and organically woven into the saga. You understand the different choices they make, the risks they take, and what's going on in their head even when you disagree with them. The romance between them (which lurks in the background most of the time) feels far more realistic than most of the romance in Star Wars books. Without delving into spoilers, by the end of the book their relationship seems well-worn and lived in that's sort of rare in fiction (it's a common joke in the YA world that the last line of every book should be "and then they probably broke up six months later.") These are interesting characters with backgrounds and stories of their own, and their relationship is complicated, just like real relationships are.

And all of this, throughout the politics and the relationships and cameos from better-known characters, manages to be great fun. The 500+ pages went by quickly. Honestly, I sometimes think Star Wars just does't translate to books very well - without the visuals and the score, some of the impact is gone, and sometimes I feel like I'm just reading a lot of tech talk and sound effects. Often I just skip around and read the main plot points to see what's going on in the galaxy at this point in the timeline. That was never an issue here. I just wished there were more of it.

This book may get lost in the shuffle; it's being marketing to an audience (YA) that's narrowed considerably since the Harry Potter era, when there was more crossover with people who normally read from the adult section. But when the dust settles and we've had time to sift through all the new Star Wars material that's come with the Force Friday deluge, Lost Stars will stand up as a high point.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a YA writer myself and I do know the author. If you want to brush off my thoughts because of that, fine. And I can sympathize with those who mourn the loss of the expanded universe books from the last 25 odd years - I can remember long days of debates with my friends about what might happen in the third Zahn book when it came out. But I like season 1 of "Rebels" more than I liked pretty much any new Star Wars stuff that had come out since 1983, and Lost Stars joins my list of reasons to think the new canon will be worth it. Give it a shot and enjoy the ride. I can even entertain a hope that it could get more people to check out the YA section again and see if there's anything else good in there...

Good Book, Priced Way Too High

This book is a good resource in terms of how it is designed, and how it sources out different resources for research purposes. I use it a lot when it comes to preliminary research on a given topic in medieval military history. But, the downside to the book mostly comes from its price. I have to go to the library every time I need it because it is way too expensive for me to buy (even used). It is frustrating because the book is not that big, and it only gives basic bibliographical information on a somewhat confined topic. Thus, it gets three stars; it gives the information it needs to concerning the title and what most readers will expect, but it really should not cost over $100 dollars. Hopefully the professors/authors who write these types of overpriced books will someday realize that they will reach out much more to a broader range of people if they only make their books affordable!!! Appealing to a larger crowd SHOULD be the goal of all authors and teachers!!!

Closely Watched Trains is the subtle and poetic portrait of Milos Hrma, a timid young railroad apprentice who insulates himself with fantasy against a reality filled with cruelty and grief. Day after day as he watches trains fly by, he torments himself with the suspicion that he himself is being watched and with fears of impotency. Hrma finally affirms his manhood and, with a sense of peace and purpose he has never known before, heroically confronts a trainload of Nazis.

Heroism of common people

This is a tale about heroism of ordinary people, not about epic feats. You won't find here but common people, and that's what makes the tale so touching and realistic. The book is beautiful and is beautifully written, with a sober yet elegant and poetic style. The trains are an essential part of all the characters'lives in their jobs and their personal memories, and are related to the fight of Czechs partisans at the end of the II World War, which is the time the novel is placed. The novel is both dramatic and comic, and Hrabal's sense of humour is one of his most remarkable features, following the best tradition of Czech's Literature, particularly Jaroslav Hasek. The mixture of drama and comedy, as well as the human touch and tenderness which envelops the characters makes this novel very moving to every reader. This work is a little and brilliant jewel, definitely worth the trouble reading.

A Beautiful Story Beautifully Told

Bohumil Hrabal's Closely Watched Train is a beautiful book whose lingering impact on the reader is greater than one would suspect from looking at its length - 85 pages. It is the story of a young man, Milos Hrma, an apprentice signalman in a Czech village railway station during WWII. The term closely "watched trains" refers to German military (soliers, prisoners, and munitions) trains that must be watched, tracked closely to ensure a smooth passage. Failure results in close (and often deadly) scrutiny by the Gestapo. As the story it unfolds that young Milos had recently attempted suicide after his first sexual experience ends disastrously. The scars on his wrist reflect the internal scars and humiliation suffered as a result of his sexual failure. The rest of the book focuses on his desire to achieve manhood, by means of a succesful sexual conquest or through some "other" means. Milos' quest is ultimately succesful yet with tragic consequences. An act of simple heroism marks the story's climax. Along the way Milos has a near fatal encounter with a Gestapo officer after an incident involving a closely watched train. The understated description of this encounter is a brilliant piece of writing as the officer and Milos closely watch each other's scars before the officer decides to spare his life. The above summary does not do justice to the concise, sparse tone of Hrabal's prose that conveys great depths of meaning in the course of the story's simple narrative.
This is a beautiful story, beautifully told. I also recommend the movie (available on Amazon)after reading the book. It won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 1966. The screenplay was written by Hrabal and altough not totally faithful to the book's narrative it is well acted and serves as a nice complement to the book.
I strongly recommend this book.

A bittersweet picture of losing innocence

A basis for a 1967 Oscar winning movie (dir. jiri Menzel) Hrabal's book is drawing a parallel between the loss of innocence of a youth Milos Hrma, and the Czech people during WW II. The experiences of Milos, an apprentice with a small railway station in the middle of Bohemia, tells you more about the role of Czech people, collaborateurs, middlemen, resistors, under the German occupation than an Encyclopedia. Beautifully written, in the best Central European tradition of irony and self-deprecation.
