A clear, insightful springboard to understanding business.

Seeing the Big Picture teaches the reader how to assess and reason about the financial present and future of a business — to see its big picture. It teaches this by exploring a model of business health and using that model to interpret example financial statements. This sounds dry and technical. However, the model places the highest importance on organisational culture and leadership. Furthermore, story-telling and examples illustrate every concept. The author's motivating argument is that:

1. The most effective employees and leaders act in the interest of the big picture.
2. Company leadership will entrust decision making power to employees who can see the big picture.

The book is couched in plain, simple language and is perfectly organised. I wouldn’t change a thing. I also genuinely appreciated the absence of rubbish. I didn’t have to suffer the author’s ego for even a second. I could learn without friction or frustration.

The only danger is that a reader may mistake this simplicity for a lack of depth and read without thinking. The upside is that the book is so short and simple that a slow, in-depth reading is still possible in good time.

The second half on financial statements is slightly more tedious. However, the author is well aware of this and offers quick run downs (e.g. The Income Statement in a Matter of Minutes) followed by optional in-depth explorations (e.g. The Income Statement in About 30 Minutes). The second half of the book could even be left as a reference for when actually attempting to read financial statements.

All in all, the clarity, conciseness and low price add up to an incredible return on time and money spent for non-finance readers. The author suggests to continue learning about business after reading the book. I have been reading and taking courses on corporate finance. This book has provided an excellent basis for learning the principles of accounting and finance. It is the best place to start. In fact, learning from other sources just makes me appreciate this exceptionally clear book even more.

I'm a business owner and am always on the prowl for good, informational books that would help me run my business. Kevin Cope's book is a short book but packed tight with valuable information that would be useful to a business that is still in the idea stage as well as one that has been running for a while. Mr Cope touches on the critical topics that every owner should master in their businesses. If you are the head of a business or even if you want to know what the heads of business think about, do not hesitate in getting and reading this book.

A Must-Have Reference Book

I hate math. I hate company financial discussions. But I like this book. It is as if Cope is in my head, answering my unspoken questions. Just when he explains something containing a financial term I've forgotten, he inserts a simple definition of that very term. I love the practical story of Autin's Cycle Shop, too. It is told in stages, with each stage inserted into the text to illustrate the point Cope is making at the moment. Oh yes, it is written in layman's language, or I wouldn't have ever bothered reading it. This book is a must-have reference book for your desk--an illuminating and confidence-building cheat sheet for all of us non-financial folks.

This book is not my usual taste in reading, but I figured for $.99 I would try it. I really liked it. And it is a full length book , which is great. Joe slowly becomes more effeminate, including less body hair. His wife secretly slips him female hormones and he grows boobs. I don't want to give any more away, but it is definitely one hot story. Then he ends up in an asylum type facility in Mexico which is really a slave fantasy retreat where men pay to stay for whatever length of time they desire. Joe's wife signs him up for longer than he thought!! Bottom line, excellent story line plus a great price.

I really enjoyed this story. There were the ocassional spots where it looked like the wrong word may have been used; but the story kept up a great pace with well developed characters and a story instead of just a simple plot. I personally would love to see more of this writer's works if he has any, or encourage him to start writing more. He has a great concept of conversational dialog and is very descriptive without going into the mundane or absurd while doing so.

A must-read on South Sudan

A number of books have been written on Southern/South Sudan but this book by Ambassador Steven Wondu is a rare one that is written from the view point of an insider with objectivity, a brilliant literary mastery and a good sense of humour. The author went through an extraordinary life experience of poverty and deprivation throughout the two civil wars in the Sudan and, with outstanding fortitude and intellect, overcame the challenges to emerge as a leading figure in the international process that led to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005. The book is an embodiment of what Ambassador Wondu is today: down to earth, visionary and "proud of himself without looking down on others," just as his father was as the author shares at the beginning of the narratives. I wish it will be read widely throughout South Sudan particularly by the youth, who will be the future of the new nation that is still afflicted by destitution, internal conflicts and destructive political competitions over power and resources. An abridged version with drawings will also help children have access to the essence of the book.

The book is also a must-read for all international advisors, consultants and agency/NGO staff. International advice and knowledge transfer should be offered with good perspectives on what the recipients of the advice and transfer have been going though and their world of knowledge and experience. The book also provides an insight into wisdom, values and education that have been passed through generations in the land of the present-day South Sudan. During the post CPA period, I remember that agencies were writing and saying "Southern Sudan has to start from scratch" or "there is absolute lack of capacity in Southern Sudan." In retrospect, as this book indicates, and just as many South Sudanese working with international staff can share with us once we are open to the perspective and develop humble attitudes to listen and learn, systems and practices in the past, albeit their incompleteness in comparison with current international standards, must have been the starting point of the post CPA reconstruction. This may be perhaps the greatest lesson learned for the international development community, as they ponder the way forward in the wake of the violent crisis that erupted in December 2013.

This is such a fantastic book I hate to write anything and ruin it for the reader. So all I am going to say is take Danill Zverev a ruthless man set in his way, people follow his rules and he answers to no one. Ballet teacher Libby Tennent is the complete opposite and when they meet its the like the sun coming out on a rainy day, such a lovely book. There is such depth to the story and both have their own deep secrets and pain but what a journey you have and the chemistry between them is amazing. A stand alone book but part of a quartet and I can hardly wait for the rest. Absolutely loved it not pass this one up.

I loved this book. This is the 1st of a 4 part series and I was not disappointed. The hero was emotionally inept, he had suffered from the time he was put in the orphanage in Russia with only his twin as family. Four boys that bonded because they were orphaned. Daniil, his brother, Roman, the nerd, Sev and Nickolai. They were there for each other. Circumstances

I really enjoyed this book. The spark of something wonderful was instant between Daniil Zverev, and Libby Tennent. Libby challenged Daniil every step of the way.

Daniil never got close to people. He had been in an orphanage until he was 12. There was 4 boys that bonded together. It was Daniil, and his twin brother Roman, and Nikolai, and Sevastyan. Daniil was adopted, and he lost contact with the other boys. Not by his choice. His letters never got mailed, and he never received mail after he was adopted. His own adopted family didn't understand Daniil, and I don't think they tried. He felt like he was damaged goods.

The first time he met Libby, he knew there was something special about her. He told her he did NOT do commitments. Each time they parted, he intended it to be forever, yet, he couldn't stay away from Libby. I loved the way Libby fought for what she wanted, and taught Daniil what it meant to be in a relationship.

Sample from chapter 11 - "I want flowers, I want conversation, I want phone calls and texts, and presents..." He went to open his mouth but she got there first. "And before you accuse me of demanding expensive gifts, that's not what I mean. I'm tired of living on a knife edge. It's not all about whether you want to see me again, Daniil. It's about whether or not I want to see you, too, and if you can't be bothered to pick up your phone and ask about my day then I don't want you a part of it anymore."

I won't spoil the story for you, but it is a refreshing, wonderful book.

Why write another guide to observing the Moon? That was the question I was pondering as I began this project, having a fine collection of "classic" lunar guidebooks dating back to 1791 in my own library. As a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), member of the American Astronomical Society's Division for Planetary Sciences (AAS DPS), and member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), I am fortunate to know many pro� fessionallunar scientists who keep me up to date with developments in lunar scienc- contrary to public perception, lunar science has definitely not stagnated since the last Apollo, No. 17, left the surface of the Moon in December, 1972. I am also lucky to know many amateur lunar observers, who, like me, enjoy actually looking at the Moon with tele� scopes and imaging it with a wide variety of devices ranging from regular 35 mm cameras to video recorders and CCD cameras. My friends who study the Moon, whether in their professions or just for fun, gave me several reasons for doing "another" lunar guidebook. First, the last lunar observer's guide of any length was published over ten years ago, and many reviewers noted that it was badly out of date even then.

A Moon Observer's Handbook

Wlasuk's book is a useful reference for amateur observers and contains specific information about many lunar surface features. Illustrations are clear although some of the photography (b&w only) is inferior compared to other similar books. The book contains several observer report templates and are especially useful if the amateur is hunting for so-called Transient Lunar Phenomena, most likely venting of volcanic gas. A CD-ROM (termed a 'lunar atlas') is included. However, several features I wanted to look out were not on the CD! (I.e., the important volcanic crater Aristarchus--possibly still an active area of vulcanism on the Moon). I personally did not agree with the orthodox recounting of how the Moon formed. Fission is still a workable hypothesis. And it is clear the Apollo missions created more questions than answers about the Moon. One unresolved question not mentioned in this book is the tektite controversy. Some evidence (Apollo 12 specimen and Apollo 16 volcanic glasses) points to at least one type of tektite found on Earth as being lunar in origin. Despite these points, I still recommend this volume for your favorite "lunatic." : )

Don't Waste Your Money, There are Better Books, and Cheaper

Wlasuk's book, _Observing the Moon_ is OK if you have nothing else, but there are better references available, for less money. His illustrations are so-so and his explanations somewhat hard to follow. In many cases, his descriptions of lunar features are not illustrated, so one cannot see what he is describing. A better book for the serious lunar astronomer is Ernest Cherrington's _Exploring the Moon With Binoculars and Small Telescopes_, available on Amazon.com for about 1/3 the price of Wlasuk's book.
