An Inspiring Book

Live a Life You Love is a very personal book by Dr. Susan Biali. In it she talks about how she changed her own life. While working as a doctor, she liked helping people, but felt harried and oddly dissatisfied. Surprising those who knew her, she decided to leave the medical profession and pursue her passion to become a writer--and a flamenco dancer!

In the book she encourages us to think about changing our lives as well. She asks us if we are truly happy in our jobs, in our relationships, with our lives. She talks about the importance of nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. In a clear and simple way, she outlines seven steps to follow in sections titled:

* Allow Yourself to be You
* Learn to Love Yourself
* Honor Your Body
* Rescue and Revitalize Your Relationships
* Get a Life!
* Make Room for the Divine
* Make "Someday" Today

The author presents many ideas in this book, in an easy-to-read format. Even if you're not contemplating changing careers or making other major changes, Live a Life You Love has valuable ideas for making smaller but important changes. I found it interesting and inspiring.

Practical, Inspiring, Relatable and Wise

Susan's book has lifted me up after a physically and emotionally exhausting week. I picked it up and couldn't put it down. It felt like Susan was sitting right next to me, reminding me of all the things that truly matter in life. In every area that I've been neglecting or having a hard time with, she was right there with helpful stories and gentle reminders about how to turn things around.

This book is straightforward, relatable, fun to read, engaging, practical, inspiring and above all - helpful!

From the last chapter: "Under all the stress, fear, failures, and wrong choices you might have made in your life, you know who you really are, and how you're meant to live. I hope I've successfully reminded you of how totally original you are, how worthy of love you are, how brilliant and wonderful your body is, and what you you need to thrive."

Susan achieves her mission with flying colors in this book. She is vulnerable, relatable and wise, and I recommend it highly to anyone looking to re-connect with what is most important in life.

Incredible Personal Journey!

"The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost

Some personal journeys are too incredible to be anything, but non-fiction. Susan Biali, M.D.'s story is one of those too fantastic to believe if it wasn't true genre. Halfway through an Emergency Medicine residency, with $100,000 in medical school loans, and suicidal, Dr. Biali had an epiphany: to quit the residency and take up dancing (dancing was her dream career as a child). Along the way, the Canadian born author moved to Mexico, performed the flamenco on stage before Sean Penn, married a fellow dancer, became a published writer and a noted speech-maker. Needless to say this took a lot of courage! As Biali confesses, "All I had was a little bit of talent, a lot of passion, a big dream and piles of faith."

In Live a Life You Love, Biali shares the keys to finding personal fulfillment even if it leads to an unconventional path. Much of the information -- finding your passion; self-love; healing yourself; trusting in a higher power -- is not new (at least not to any reader well versed in the self help genre). That is not to say that this information is not well-packaged because it is. The writing is both entertaining and informative.

Still what is new and what drew me into Live a Life You Love is the author's highly inspirational tale! I really admired the choices Biali made. And this admiration gave her writing more credence than many tomes preaching motivation with cliches that provide little inspiration.

Live a Life You Love is worth reading for Biali's personal story alone!

Good overview on learning theorists

This is an excellent book to get a taste of learning theoriests, a good beginners book. Crain covers the most important learning theorists, Chomsky, Kolhberg, Montessori, Freud, to name a few. However this book is not completely objective, Crain's opions slip in from time to time. I suggest if you are really interested in learning theory to read more in depth on the theorists he covers in the book. This is a wonderful book for anyone who has children, works with children, or anyone interested in psychology. Tip: This book is also commonly used as a textbook and you can get it cheaper here than at a college bookstore. (usually $44 at bookstore)

I purchased this for a class on human development. It was a good overview of historical theory. I especially liked the evaluation section at the end of each chapter that discusses strengths and weaknesses of the theories presented.

Possibly pirate copy?

While I have not had a chance to read through the whole book, what I have read I like. The book presents the selection of engineering materials in a well organized and clearly written format. In the sections that are not covered as thoroughly, there is enough information provided to enable the reader to get a good general understanding and to find and evaluate additional references.

The reason I did not give this five stars is that I am not sure I got a genuine copy from the lawful publisher. The title on the spine of the book is "Selection and Use of Engineering Materials", whereas on the cover the word "Materials" is missing. I find it hard to believe that the lawful publisher would leave out a word in the title on the cover of the book, so I suspect I got a cheap reprint from somewhere. I have not been able to find any other differences between the book I bought and the pdf I was reading while I waited for my copy to arrive. I bought my copy used through Amazon, but not from Amazon directly.

About the Author
Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (1910–1991) was a highly accomplished meditation master, scholar, and poet, and a principal holder of the Nyingma lineage. His extraordinary depth of realization enabled him to be, for all who met him, a foundation of loving-kindness, wisdom, and compassion. A dedicated exponent of the nonsectarian Rime movement, Khyentse Rinpoche was respected by all schools of Tibetan Buddhism and taught many eminent teachers, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He tirelessly worked to uphold the Dharma through the publication of texts, the building of monasteries and stupas, and by offering instruction to thousands of people throughout the world. His writings in Tibetan fill twenty-five volumes.

Helpful and Inspirational

This is one of the best books I've ever read about how to carry the basic practices of Tibetan Buddhism into daily life. It tells how to consider the nearness of the "guru", or teacher, during sleep, while eating, walking, and all the time, bringing compassion and devotion into every moment. This book is truly about having a "love affair" with your spiritual practice. It's written by one of the most revered tibetan teachers in a language that's emotional, accessible and not overly scholarly. At the same time it addresses specific issues of great importance to the Longchen Nyingtik Ngondro, one of the "preliminary practices" of Tibetan Buddhism. Read, reread and enjoy!

A book, a friend, a guide

Whether a newcomer to meditation, or more specifically to guru yoga in the Tibetan Nyingma tradition - or a somewhat more experienced practitioner, this book is extraordinary. If you are new to this kind of mediation, I would say it is one of the best guides into it (as a follow-up to your master's introduction and empowerment, of course). If you have practised guru yoga for a while, you have in your hands a treasury of inspiration. You will be able to dig into it again and again, and still go deeper. If a book can transmit the wisdom-mind of a buddhist master, this is it! H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche is right there with you.

A Practice Handbook

I agree completely with the two previous reviews, and have only one point to add. For students of Tibetan Buddhism who are actually doing the Guru Yoga practice of the Longchen Nyingthig Ngondro, this is a priceless handbook to suppliment and remind them of their own teacher's instructions. It makes an excellent companion to "Words of My Perfect Teacher", Patrul Rimpoche's guide to the entire Ngondro practice.

About the Author
Mary F. Hoffman (Ph.D., University of Kansas) is associate professor and chair in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She teaches courses in organizational rhetoric, organizational communication and rhetorical criticism. Her research is concerned with how individuals negotiate organizational demands that conflict with personal values. Her work on three organizations of Benedictine nuns has been published in Communication Studies, Western Journal of Communication, and Journal of Communication and Religion. Her work on how individuals and organizations negotiate the idea of work/life balance has appeared in Qualitative Research Reports in Communication and Communication Quarterly.

Debra J. Ford (Ph.D., University of Kansas) is assistant dean for student affairs and research assistant professor at the University of Kansas School of Nursing. She also teaches in the University of Kansas Department of Communication Studies. She has worked for twelve years in recruitment, advising and administration in nursing education, and has taught for ten years. She teaches courses in organizational communication, organizational rhetoric, leadership, communication theory and health communication. Her research focuses on strategies used by organizations to influence public policy, group communication processes in public-private partnerships, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. She has published articles in Communication Theory, Health Communication, Western Journal of Communication, and Communication Studies, among others. She is the principal investigator on a U. S. Dept. of Education GAANN grant.
